Privacy

What this website collects, why, and what you can do about it. In short: the contact form comes to us by email, and Google Analytics tells us how the site is used without receiving anything that identifies you by name.

Who we are

This website belongs to Point Duty Traffic Court Defence & Legal Services, a paralegal practice in Ontario licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. When this page says “we”, it means Point Duty and its principal, Kerlan McLean. We handle personal information in line with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and our professional duty of confidentiality.

What we collect through the contact form

When you send the consultation form, we receive the details you type: your name, phone number, email address, the type of matter, your court date if you give one, and your message. We also receive the internet (IP) address the form was sent from, which helps us spot spam.

The form is delivered to our office by email, using an email delivery service called Resend. It is not saved in a database on this website. We use what you send only to reply to you and to assess whether we can help with your matter.

Sending the form does not by itself make you our client, but we treat what you tell us as confidential. Please keep your message short and leave out anything you would not want sent by email; we will ask for the details we need when we speak.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how people find and use the site: which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are, what device they use, and how they arrived. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to do this. According to Google, Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses.

We also record two events. When someone taps a phone number, we note that a call link was used and where on the page it sat. When someone sends the contact form, we note that it was sent and the broad type of matter, such as “criminal” or “traffic”. We never send Google your name, phone number, email address, message, or the specific charge.

You can block these cookies in your browser settings, or install Google’s Google Analytics opt-out add-on. The site works the same either way.

Our website host

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like most hosts, Vercel keeps technical logs, such as IP addresses and the time of a request, to run and secure the service.

Information stored outside Canada

Google, Resend and Vercel are based in the United States, so information handled by them may be stored or processed there and may be accessible to authorities under United States law.

How long we keep it

We keep enquiries for as long as we need them to respond and follow up. If you become a client, your information becomes part of your file and is kept as the Law Society of Ontario requires. Google keeps analytics data according to the retention settings on our account.

Changes to this page

If we change how the site handles information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
